Connection problems Ubuntu & OpenSuSe

Hi all, I'm new to Linux and am having all sorts of problems trying to get Linux to identify my ADSL Router connection (cable connection switch to card). I have run ifconfig and IPv4 is not present but eth0 is. I have it set to automatic detection but for some reason it is not reading the Router IP. Using the ping command confirms no connection. I have contacted the router support desk and they have confirmed my settings are OK and that it should work with Linux. My WinXP machines are all working so I know the router is active. I can only think it is either a dodgy cable (I'll try a new one tonight) or it ness some setting changes at which point I need all the help I can get please.

About opensuse is the eternet recognize by opensuse ?
Assuming that you,re adsl router is connected to you,re PC with a eternet card.
Do you use DHCP ?
If it is connected with to eternet card , configure the eternet card first.

Solved

Problem solved. It was a defective network cable (and it was a new one!), how embarassing!!. Lesson learnt - check all the connections and change cables first!!
Thanks everyone for your help, at least I learned a few troubleshooting commands along the way.
