connectingto a NAS deivice using samba just throws me back to ~

I have a NAS drive that uses windows filesharing/samba to acsess located on 192.168.1.31

if i go to smb://192.168.1.31 using nautalis
i can see the designated shares
if i then click on any of thease shares it instally mooves me back to my home directory without any messages or anything

trying to mount it with smbnount gives

Code:
sudo smbmount //192.168.1.31/PUBLIC mountpoint
Password:
mount error 5 = Input/output error
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)
with an empty password (as it isnt a passworded share)
