Connecting Windows XP to linux

Hi everybody,
I want to connect two computers running windows XP and RH 8.0. I have heard that I can do it in two ways viz. via cross cable with LAN card and null modem over serial port. Can anybody help me with the detailed procedure with hardware connections.
