I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 64bit on a Dell Precision M65 Laptop.
I use autofs for all shares I need to access, it's good because I have shares at work and at home and autofs only mount's on demand.

Setup for autofs is similar as settings shares in fstab
workshare -fstype=smbfs,credentials=/etc/.mypassword,rw,uid=1000,gid=16777216 ://172.1.1.221/shared

The reson I use the UID and GID is that 1000 is my user id and GID is my GROUP ID on the windows domain is 16777216

I also tried to use the GUI ( Places -> Network ) and found my same share and browsed into it normally without problems.
you have smbfs and smbclient installed ?
