Connecting to internet with dsl modem, USB connection.

Hi, all. I hope you can help me with this:

I just installed Kubuntu on an old Dell Dimension 4100, P3 proscessor, 128 RAM. The OS works great. The only problem is that I can't connect to the internet. I have a 2Wire HomePortal 1000HG with a USB connection to the computer. (The computer is too old to have an ethernet connection.) Linux can't find the modem or connect to the internet. I have tried everything I know how to do, now I need help!

Not sure if one can connect to the USB port of the modem. Does it have an Ethernet port? If so I would say it would be no problem to pop in a pci ethernet card like a 3com 905c and a realtek one. You can search the HCL section here at the top or to the right for linux compatiable hardware. The modem you have may be listed there. Might check there for a start.

The computer I am on does not have an ethernet port. The only way it can connect to the modem is through a USB port. I am loathe to spend too much upgrading, as the computer is 7 years old. I actually uninstalled Kubuntu and intsalled SuSE 10.0 at this point, but I am having the same problem.

Even if does not have one does it have an open PCI expansion slot?
If so you can get a Linux compatiable Nic for less than $20.00
