Connecting to device without knowing IP

I have plugged a device into my network card, and was told that its default IP address would be 169.254.X.X. How can I find its IP address to connect to it? It's plugged directly into my network card in my desktop machine. If I was in Windows, there is a tool to automatically discover it :-(

A 169.*.*.* IP address is - 99.9% of the time - for an active network card that has not been assigned an IP address through DHCP (or any other protocol that would provide automatic IPs; PPPoE, et cetera).

What type of device, exactly, are you trying to connect to via Ethernet?

I'm trying to connect to a NAS.

Are you going through a router, hub, switch...anything?

No, I'm plugged right in. But I figured it out. I did a broadcast ping and found it.
