Connecting linux machine to windows network

Hi,
I'm running dual booting win XP with FC2.My machine is on a LAN and connected via ethernet card.I'd like to know how I could put the Linux partition on the network.Net is accessed through dial-up.I tried configuring the network settings, but couldn't connect to the net. Please help.

please define exactly what you can and can't do under linux. you have a LAN right? so can you ping other LAN nodes? what does the output of /sbin/ifconfig say? have you tried giving the NIC a static IP?

Well,I tried doing a ping on the LAN nodes, but it didn't work out.And I haven't tried giving a static IP to NIC,coz I don't know how to(Please forgive my braindead nature). What exactly can I do to get myself on the network? And will the other windows machine detect the Linux node?Plese advise.

man ifconfig

also /sbin/netconfig if you have it.
