configuring my cisco pcmcia card

I had been using mandrake 10.1on my laptop. I had a cisco pcmcia card working that was connected to my dlink 2100ap. Now I have put fedora core 3 on and I cannot seem to get it working.

What I have been doing so far is...

boot up, I then open a shell and type

iwconfig wifi0 essid (my ssid)
iwconfig wifi0 channel 6
iwconfig wifi0 mode managed

After I have typed this and just do an 'iwconfig', I can see that I have picked up the mac address of my access point and I see fluctuations with the power level so there is some form of communication between my wireless card in the laptop and my access point.

Now when I type 'neat' and configure a new wireless network connection and enter all my network settings which have been.......

selecting managed and changing the essid to my ssid name, setting my ip address.

As soon as I apply those settings, if i do an iwconfig the mac address that it had picked up earlier has no changed to all fs i.e. ffffffff. From here I cannot ping anything from my laptop.

In fact I'm not even sure if I am going the process right.

any help much appreciated!
