are you running a firewall on your linux setup? also, if you try to ping a website (e.g. ping www.apple.com) does it resolve the name to an ip address or not? that's a better way to test if your dns is working, as they may not like people pinging it and could have turned off ping replies.

Does your network connection look like this, if not how is everything connected?

{Internet/cable wire}--[Cable Modem]---[W2K/RH9 box]

Did you manually add the IP address and other settings into RH9 and if so did you have to do that in Windows as well? If not then you may need to set up RH9 to use DHCP. It's also possible, depending on how the cable co is set up, that you have some sort of ethernet bridging that requires authentication be done on your computer, instead of doing it in the DSL modem. Does the DSL modem have it's own IP address and/or a web interface?

You said you can ping "my server" but what exactly is that? Is it another computer on your network or a system at the ISP or the DSL Modem or something else?

How far out can you get? These pings verify connectivity in various stages from your computer out to The Internet. If you can't get one to work, you likely will not be able to go any farther down the list. Where does it stop working?:
Code:
ping 127.0.0.1
#use ifconfig to see if you have an IP address and what it is
ping {your IP address}
# you either assigned this or it shows up when you type /sbin/route -e
ping {default gateway}
# you either assigned this as the DNS server or it shows up when you type cat /etc/resolv.conf
ping {nameserver}
ping 64.179.4.149
ping www.linuxquestions.org

Re:configuration of internet thru Lan

hi Darin,
thanx for ur reply.

My network conxn looks like this.

{ISP}---{Internet/cable wire}----{win2k/RH9} thru the LAN card

You were right with the authentication part.
My ISP requires a downloadable application called crclient which has to be installed (both for win2k and RH9)
He has given me the following addresses.
IP
Subnet
Default gateway
Dns:
After manually entering all the info..
./crclient -u username
It then prompts for the password
Once that is done i ping the IP,subnet,Default gateway and the DNS.
The IP responds.The others don't.
Also if I ping say linuxquestions.org ,it simply gets stuck.
In the browser,any site simply says "resolving name" and does not respond..

This is the scenario that I am facing with.plz help..
PS:As u can see,i am pretty new to linux.Any suggestion would be much appreciated..

hey,
got it solved..
it was the authetication problem with my ISP client and configuration to static IP addresses instead of DHCP..

thanks,
Jared
