Comcast Hi-Speed w/ RH9

I am trying to use a Redhat9 system with Comcast's Cable Internet Service and I'm having some trouble.

When I try to get a dynamic ip from the cable modem, i get the error: "Can't get IP for eth0" or something like that.

I've heard that Comcast does the ip allocation based on hostname, so I've set the computer's hostname to the required value as well as set the value DHCP_HOSTNAME in the ifcfg file and in the /etc/sysconfig/network/, etc...

So now I'm getting frustrated since Comcast says they don't support Linux. Anyone do this? with any version of linux?

thanks

i have comcast hi-speed and i connet using a linux firewall. there is nothing like assigning ip by hostname. if your network card is setup to dhcp that is enough.

P.S. dont bother calling comcast for support, they dont even know how to spell Linux

OK, I have a few questions for you. Did you used to the cable modem hooked up to another NIC maybe on the same PC or on another PC? If you did then you have to call Comcast and tell them that the NIC you were using "broke" and you need to to reset their MAC auth table. They use the MAC address of the first NIC it sees on the service for future authentication for the service. SO a new NIC might screw it up.

Or make sure you don't a firewall running while your trying to get an IP just disable it temporarily and then re-enable after you get an IP.

I called them and asked if they needed to reset the mac address, they said that they didn't, And I have switched two Win2k computer's out to the connection without a problem. All I have to do is power cycle the modem.

I did turn off iptables while I was testing the whole thing.

I'll try to take out the DHCP_HOSTNAME value and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks
