cnet pro200 PCI lan card problem

my linux kernel is 2.6.8 and i cannot seem to get an internet access thru my lan card although the installation of mandrake 10.1 has detected it as Davicom DM9102 which is also the driver that the NIC manual recommends. i can configure everything from IP Address to gateway and DNS and everything seems to be ok until when i try to ping the gateway i get this response: DESTINATION HOST UNREACHABLE (56) 84

it was also stated in the readme.txt of the NIC card that the kernel should be 2.4 but mandrake 10.1 has 2.6 ...could that be the problem?

anyone knows a solution to this problem?thanks a lot.

P.S.
when i ran Mandrake control center i can see that the module loaded for the Davicom Driver is tulip...everything seems to work but i cannot ping other computers in the network.
