client cannot connect to sendmail smtp

Hi.

I finally got my sendmail up running and when I start it in console mode everything works fine (I get the 220 ... message) but when I start the daemon, I cant connect from the same server using

telnet localhost 25

I just get

Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

Connection from outside isnt possible neither.
I opened the port 25 tcp in and out with iptables and when I do a netstat I see sendmail listening on port 25.
With LogLevel=14 I dont get any message from sendmail when trying to connect.

Is there anything I may have forgotten when setting up sendmail or what else could be blocking the connection?

thanks for helping.
