clarification on a CNAME in a primary zone

I have a server ubuntu.mydomain.com 192.168.1.XXX it has a cname of git.mydomain.com should I enter as a:
ubuntu IN A for 192.168.1.XX
git IN CNAME as ubuntu.mydomain.com.
or
git IN CNAME as 192.168.1.XX
I am a littleconfused even after reading the Bind 9 guide

Hi,

The 1st is the correct one.
You should use a hostname and not an IP address.

Cheers

And to perhaps shed some light on your confusion, CNAME is an alias, it tells the resolver to "go look up this name for the IP". So entering an IP as a CNAME defeats the purpose.

Hope that helps too.
