Cisco switch
 

i just received a 1900 series cisco switch. How do i get to the web interface? i connected to the console port and went to my gateway ip address i dont unserstand i tried a crossover cable also someone please give me some insite

Then you will see the IP address that is configured in the switch. If you connect to it with a web browser you should get the login prompt for the web interface.

If not, you may enable it with:

That seems to be some linux commands im trying to configure it through windows right now. The ip says its 192.168.1.1 and i goto that in my webbrowser and it just wont pop up with the web interface.
This is the code you wannted me to input but i woulld bet thats in linux

:( i appreciate the help though, i seen somewhere about a serial to rj 45 cable do i need one or will regular ethernet work?

and im trying to enable this switch through windows one ethernet cable connected to the console port plus i tried hooking it to the regular ports and i tried a crossover cable.

that's not linux, that's IOS. is your switch running IOS then? do a "sh ver" on the switch to show what it's using (in IOS at least... i assume that won't work if it's runnign catOS).

in general though, you really should refer to the cisco.com documentation, that's what it's there for.

and btw if you use Windows to connect the you'll have to use hyper terminal application to connect to the cisco.
Check the documents of documentation regarding the settings you'll need to adjust in order to get on the serial console. In the most cases the cable is blue...

ok thank you for an answer took about a day :) thought i never get one. Ok so i have went to cisco site and plenty of other ones actually i still got 11 ie's open :) and i have read about hyper terminal. Ok so even though its got an ios i still have to connect via hyper terminal? and even without a db9 to rj45 connector i can still connect to the routers ios?

The console port is the only way to connect to its configuration?

you *know* for a fact that there's a web interface, so you know also then that the console port is not the only way. it's often thesimplest way to get in to configure the bare minimum for you to get in. personally i'm still waiting for the sh ver... but again please refer to the documentation, there will be clear details of default ip addresses it will use, how to access the web interface etc...

if you're concerned about the speed of the reply, again please note this is a linux forum, not a cisco one...

its just i got so much help here and i posted under general and this is the only forum that actually gets reponds to my post :) And i meant nothing by the time frame on the repond i was just messin around it was actually a thanks for answering, usually people answer pretty quick but i guess your right im in here asking about cisco switches

i don't mean to discourage you off course, anyone that can help will. i'm cisco certified, but as i mentioned before these are older and any device i've ever worked with in the last 3 years...

maybe you can answer it it then. I hook this switch up between my computer and the switch to try and get to the web interface. I have read thousands of doc trying to explain to me what i got to do to makes this work. Anyway i hook up my comp to this witch but then it says trying to obtain ip address and then fails and gives me a bunk one. And i know this is because there is no DHCP so i try simple ips such as 192.168.0.1 192.168.1.1 to try and get into its web interface and they all fail. In one doc from cisco it says the default ip is 0.0.0.0 with hostname switch so its obvious that 0.0.0.0 wont work so i tried going to the hostname and still no luck. In your experience with newer switches #1 what is the default ip address? #2 im new at this and just try like any other device such as a router 192.168.0.1.

I also read in the cisco doc that you need to connect via hyperterminal and give it an ip address but i read to if it has a web interface you dont have to do this. So now im lost

You didnt offend in anyway and i know this is a linux forum and should be talking about linux but this forum is "God" compared to the rest of them, and hey at least im not talking about windows.

and this one should be even more concise... http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/...v9x/1900qs.htm just pick a document and if / as / when you get stuck ask specific questions and refer to the step you have trouble with. only thing that may get in the way is if you didn't get given a light blue console cable with the switch. if you didn't, i assume they're $2 each on ebay. from the docs it doesn't look like it gets given a default ip address at all, so initial console access is probably essential. you've eluded to using console connections, but i can't make out if you actually have done it or not.

db9 to rj45 connector?
 

is the type of connector i need a db9 to rj45? Also i dont want to wait for this item on ebay we got a decent computer store here that has everything from a to z you think they will have these connectors?

it's not as simple as shape one to shape two. needs to be a cisco rollover serial cable. the top one here... http://www.ciscomonkeys.com/monkeyst...x.php?cPath=21

i understand but its as simple as connecting the rj45 to the console port on the switch? then to a serial port on computer? then use hyperterminal to connect the serial connection . Is that what you mean but shape to shape connection?

Do you think i could purchase one at my local computer store?

the pins in the cable are "unusual" compared to normal cables, so if the wires go to the wrong place, you're not going to get anywhere. it's no secret, and you can absolutely make it yourself if you get, for example, a modular rj45 to db9 adapter, where you can connect each pin as you see fit... on balance that's a more likely find at a corner store, but then you have to wire it up right, which again isn't "hard" but needs to be correct. with that, you can just use a normal network cable plus the adapter.
