CentOS 5.2 cannot activate network device on board Intel NIC

Hello,

I have been reading through a vast number of posts about this subject, but haven't been able to resolve my problem. I think I've narrowed it down the system not recognizing my actual network card.

lspci shows:
Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82567LF-2 Gigabit Network Connection

There are only three Intel ethernet drivers when I go to set up the network adapter. They are all Intel EtherExpress drivers... I selected the Intel EtherExpress/1000 Gigabit, but it doesn't work. Every time I try to create a device on eth0 it gives me the cannot activate network device because eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization.

ifconfig -a doesn't show any eth0 device... just lo and sit0

cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 shows:
TYPE=Ethernet
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=yes
USERCTL=no
IPV6INIT=no
PEERDNS=yes

I apologize for what I feel is going to be a simple solution. I'm new to CentOS and didn't have any such problems on OpenSUSE. Let me know if there is any other information that might help resolve this issue.

Thanks,
Nino

You should use the e1000e module for this nic. If the one that comes with your distro does not work, try to compile the driver from intel or maybe better from sourceforge.
You need the kernel sources in order to compile a device driver.

Thank you so much! I went to the SourceForge site and they just updated their drivers 5 days ago. I installed the new drivers and it recognized eth0. Here is a link (for those that are as new to this as myself) that helps with the Intel driver update:

http://www.intel.com/support/network/sb/cs-009209.htm

Thanks for the help and useful links.

Nino
