Question cant run cgi scripts

hi!
i have installed Apache 1.2.30 it came with the Mandrake 8.1 package.
Anyway i was able to start httpd and able to get the default page up on my system.
Now to run a cgi script i did put the script file in the cgi-bin directory. Initailly i used to get the script source on my browser but now it says it cant find the url or pathe of the script..
I am unable to run the scripts from anywhere. Most books talk about "srm.conf" and one more of the files but here i have only "httpd.conf" with me and i am not able to discern any knowledge as to where the scripts shud reside to run when called.

can someone tell me a way out.. i am a newbie

could be any number of things, but make sure you are referencing the correct cgi-bin directory, the permissions of the cgi-script are set correctly or there may be an error in your httpd.conf file. These links may be able to help you out:
