Angry Cant connect to internet

I have two linux systems running 7.1. For some reason on one system I can't connect to the internet using Konqueror. When I try I get a message saying "unknown host".
I have checked my settings - DNS server etc. I have the identical settings on both boxes in network configuration. (except of course each systems individual ip addresses).
I have found a descrepency between network configuration and ifconfig.
Under interfaces in network configuration for eth0 I have
IP xxx.xxx.xxx.101
netmask 255.255.255.0
network xxx.xxx.xxx.0
broadcast xxx.xxx.xxx.255

But in ifconfig I get
inet addr: xxx.xxx.xxx.101 Bcast: xxx.xxx.xxx.100
Mask: 255.255.255.0
no errors, nothing dropped.

The last three numbers of the broadcast address is different. Any ideas?

Try using the ping command to connect to hosts on your LAN. Then try outside hosts. To set the broadcast address manually, read the manpage for ifconfig.

cant connect to the internet

I can ping all my internal machines with the ip addresses. I was able to change the broadcast address in webmin. But the problem still remains.
I can't ping any outside addresses at all.

What's your connection to the internet like? How are the two boxes connected? Hub? Gateway? Cable/ADSL/normal modem?
Give more info.

Unhappy can't connect to internet

The linux boxes are on a network with 4 Windows computers and two macs. All are connected to a Linksys 16 port hub. Connected to the hub is a Linksys router. Connected to the router is a Cisco modem for our DSL connection.

All the other systems on the network can connect to the internet.

The router is set as the gateway. It also acts as my DHCP server even though all systems except one have static IP addresses. The primary and secondary DNS addresses are supplied by my ISP. Port filtering is set on the router for ftp, mail, etc.

I have been through my settings over and over comparing them to the other linux box and to the settings on my Win2K machine.
I am just stumped.

What if you make sure one of the boxes that is working is turned off and you then set up the one that's not working to use the IP of the one that's turned off?

That'll rule out any IP-based blocking on the router.

Question can't connect to the internet

Okay, get this. I come in this morning click on Konqueror and "viola" I'm connected to the internet.
Why? I have no clue. When I left last night it wasn't working. Now it is.
This all started because last Friday it was working and Monday, for no apparent reason, it wasn't.
Go Figure!
