I know just how you feel , after 18 mo. of not being able to connect linux to linux I finally succeeded.Horah !
( this applies to Fedora Core or Redhat 9)(I installed everything at the beginning because when I go to set up something there might be utilities that you don't know you need )
I did it using my samba server
make sure smb is checked in " service configuration "
then on your menu go to "system settings" and then "server settings" then "samba"
then I did "add" for adding directory to be shared . I choose the directory and then made my selection for basic permissions. ( make sure that you give permission for the directory to be shared)
I then went to "preferences"and choose " server settings" for basics I choose my workgroup and Description "samba server" for "security I choose "share " for authentication mode &
encrypt passwords "yes" & guest account "nobody"
I then went back to "preferences and choose "Samba users" and added a user(I am not sure how much of this is absolutely nescessary But I will tell you how I did it.
Make sure this is done for both computers and that you have static IP addresses(I am sure it can be done using DHCP , but for me this is how I did it)
Then open up konqueror or nautilus and type in smb:// (&whatever IP address the other pc is using)
In my case smb://207.70.159.127
your shared directories should be seen
For giving permissions I opened up Konqeror and choose my user file in my home directory then right click on the mouse and choose properties then went to permissions and choose the settings I preferred , I hope this helps Goodluck
