cannot start vsftpd: 500 OOPS: could not bind listening IPv4 socket

I am running Mandrake Linux 10.2 and have installed the vsftpd by RPM.

When starting I get an error:

Code:
# /usr/sbin/vsftpd /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf

500 OOPS: could not bind listening IPv4 socket
All the posts I find on this error relate to the port already being bound to. I have checked locally and I have scanned from a remote system and the only port this machine is listening on is SSH.

Any comments welcome.

Peter

Look at the result of netstat -tpan -- even if thesocket is not listening it might have been used recently by another program and is in the process of being torn down. You might also want to look in lsof.

Also, just to double check, you are starting as root (it looks like it by the hash prompt in your post, but just want to check)?

I did use lsof before posting. Here is the output to your netstat command:

# netstat -tpan
