Unhappy Cannot resolve names

I have checked forums and internet to no avail, so here goes it:

Hardware is no issue. On same computer, different distro and partition, name resolving works fine with Mozilla & Konquerer.

I have a problem resolving names on Debian Sarge 1.3 running through IPCOP 1.4.8. firewall/gateway. Other computers on this network work fine with what looks like similiar configs.

In any browser, if I type in Google's i.p address (or anyone elses) I can connect, but can never get to resolve names.
I tried using (in resolv.conf) my ipcop gateway ip address for nameserver & also the nameserver numbers given by my isp. I believe either way, those have worked on other computers on network but not Sarge.
Does the resolv.conf file actually matter on this computer if i'm going through ipcop?

/etc/hosts is hosts, bind multi on as with other working comps.

I can ping the nameserver numbers I listed in resolv.conf and they are typed in correctly.

I use dig and get same response as my flawless Mepis computer on same network. I run /etc/init.d/networking restart after changes.

I believe I have no firewall on this Debian Sarge computer.

I do not have this problem with Mepis on different partition/same hard drive, and I don't see any config files that differ.

What else might stop me from resolving names?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Ya know what your situation sounds an awful lot like mine with Ubuntu. I can ping my DNS servers and they are resolved correctly bc in windows they are the same, but i cant use them at all. I cant ping anything besides the gateway or the DNS. Needless to say i cant do anything else either.

Heres my thread over at ubuntuforums.org:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=73207
The first half of it was a problem with the host and sudo so you can prolly skip the first half. The second half is about the network. I also have a post in the networking forum here with more technical information.
