Question Cannot rejoin Samba domain after replacing server hard drive

I had to replace the hard drive on my Samba server due to a failing drive.

I loaded Ubuntu 7.10 from scratch, so as far as the server box is concerned, it's a new server. This version of Ubuntu has Samba 3.0.26.

When I tried to 'rejoin' the domain with a Vista SP1 desktop (that had already been part of the domain) I get the following error message:
"Join was not successful . This could be because an existing computer account having the name machinename was previously created with a different set of credentials. Use a different computer name or contact your administrator to remove any stale conflicting account. Access is denied."
I've tried already 3 times, creating a new name, creating the machine accounts in Ubuntu and Samba, but have always received the same message.

I know that SAMBA is working because I was successfully able to join a different workstation that was never part of the domain.

Is something being stored on the Vista machine that is confusing SAMBA?

Thanks,

I suspect that Vista is confused because it's domain has disappeared, and a new domain with the same name now exists. Delete any machine account from Samba, then make sure Vista is not part of a domain, and boot Vista once without joining the domain. If everything looks OK, reboot Vista and then join it to the domain.

It's possible that SP1 causes issues, so if you get stuck, trying looking into SP1-Samba compatibility issues - I believe that MS service packs can and do break compatibility .
