cannot ping ISP mail server....

I use Alltel for my DSL service...their mail server is mail.alltel.net for both POP3 and SMTP. On my 2k server box I can ping it and check my email web-based...but from either my XP Pro or my RH9 boxes I cannot even ping it..gives "Unkown host Mail.Alltel.Net". Ok correction now I cant even ping it from my 2k server machine. WTF?!?

And I know their server isnt down because I did call a buddy who has the same service and his works perfectly. I know this isnt an 100% Linux question, but if RH could ping them the others should too.

check your routing & DNS seting first .
i think that your network schema look as :
(internet )<--->(Win2000 server)<--->(Local lan)
Local lan include linux & winXp machine
Its right ?
local lan have internet IP or 192.168.x.x ?

well, if thats what your implying...my 2k server is not setup as a proxy and does not have routing enabled. DNS is supplied by the PDC and my router using the IP supplied by the ISP. I can safely navigate to ANY other website via browsing and ping...except for anything.alltel.net Very weird considering that out of 5 people I know with Alltel access I am the only one with problems. Internally all my boxes are static'd with (starting with the router),10.0.0.1 - 6.

sounds like your block is fuxed.

Its not highly uncommon for certain segments of users to not be able to access some parts of their own isp.

Had some of that type stuff happen to me, call my friend 2 blocks away, and he had no probs.

Call the company notify them of your current issue, and how it was working, and now has stopped / you didnt change anything

Well I actually emailed them 2 days ago, and my dumba$$ included some basic info about my LAN, just for reference saying how I could access that site from 3 other boxes. Their response: "Unfortunately we do not support internal networks"

My response: "Alltel can suck my hairy left nut"

Thats a good idea Lost, except Im at work and the box is home. I will try by IP tonight and post the results. I knew that I could try that but Im also working on some RH( issues with my laptop here at the office, so I always forgot to ping it here for the IP.

Thanks

try to resolve the ip from work, and bring it home to ping..

then you can just set your own dns record for it internally
