Cannot Ping Hostname

I'm still struggling with this problem but I would appreciate some fresh ideas.

I am trying to virtual setup a domain name (vh.com) on a server that is myserver.com.
I've tried a ton of things and have gone thru a tutorial on setting up DNS caching on my box (myserver.com). My netgear router is my gateway and as long as I have my covad nameservers in /etc/resolve.conf i can get to the net.

I can do a dig and get good information returned. But I have notices that the IP address

But for the life of me, i cannot ping vh.com from the server or outside the server.

I'm running RHE 5.
when I do a ping from my linux box i get the following:
ping vh.com
ping: unknown host vh.com

Could anyone give me an idea or two on how to attact this?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

*sorry on second thought, my initial response would not have worked*

Can you post the results of "route" instead? Does that provide any insight into why the name is not resolving - like can you get to the name server?

Is ypbind also started? ("service ypbind status")

Thanks
route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface

Hmmm...ypbind is not started and could not be started. Here is part of the error msg: This is a daemon which runs on NIS/YP clients and binds them to a NIS domain. It must be running for systems based on glibc to work as NIS clients, but it should not be enabled on systems which are not using NIS.

I don't think i'm using NIS. I've never config'd it. ???

thanks rossonieri#1
That was it.

The change i made was host: dns files. i kinda thought files meant /etc/hosts and felt why check /etc/hosts first when you have dns.

I did a ping from my linux box to vh.com and it worked!
Secondly I did a ping from my pc (on same network) and it returned with a good IP address. Did did not work the last time i tried.

thanks to all who responded.
