Cannot get SWAT to run

I'm running Slackware 11.0.

My /etc/inetd.conf file has the following:

"swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/sbin/swat swat".

My /etc/services file has the following line:

"swat 901/tcp # samba web configuration tool".

When I try to access SWAT with my web browser by typing

I get the message:

"An error occurred while loading http://localhost:901/
Could not connect to localhost(port901)"

If I run nmap using the command:

"nmap -p 901 127.0.0.1" the following is returned:

"PORT STATE SERVICE"
"901/tcp closed samba-swat"

Port 901 seems to be closed. How do I open it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Is your xinetd or inetd service running? Also look at your hosts.deny and hosts.allow files. Look for the alias LOCAL. You could also run /usr/sbin/tcpdchk to check for problems.

I finally got SWAT running

To: jschiwal

It seems that the file /etc/rc.d/inetd was not executable. As soon as I changed the file to executable and rebooted I could see it being started during booting and sure enough when I ran the command ps -e, inetd showed up as running.

Thanks your help pointed me in the correct direction.
