Wink Cannot find network card drivers for apollo v5.2 red hat

Dear All,

As this is my first post it will be a little long (sorry) so I've organised it into 3 parts... me & why, the questions & the full dxdiag file (which was taken before i fdisk'd the hd) of the hardware being used.

Thanks.

Part 1. I've been in IT for over 10 years. Having worked mostly on Microsoft systems (NT4.0 - Win3003) as a senior engineer. I was introduced to Solaris 10 4 years ago but have let my skills drop until recently. I was made redundant in April & discovering that everyone (in my field) now required win2008 server experience i have decided to revisit my Unix past & hopefully move across from windows.

I have recently completed building a Red hat box using redhat V5.2 (Apollo). why you might ask? well i had two big reference books available to me (Solaris 10 & Red hat unleashed). sadly i could get my box to load Solaris 10 so I've used the red hat version available on the cd with the book. Plus my hardware is very old & being unemployed doesn't give you any financial choices...

Questions... After going through the very research intensive setup!!!! i've now got a working machine with XF86 as my window manager. however i have no working network card. I have discovered that the drivers for my card E100 are available on the kernal version 2.4 (i'm on 2.0) & having tried both rpm & tar\make neither worked. when i ran make i got lots of errors & they are arn't in
/lib/modules/2.0.36-0.7/net/ ... where all the others are. So what do you gurus recommend?

1. Do i upgrade the rpm first & to which version if so.
2. Do i upgrade the kernal first & to which version etc...
3. Is there a standard 'driver' i could try first?
4. Will any of this mean reconfiguring my xwin setup?

in an ideal world you would suggest driverxxx the full list i've got are found at

http://www.n8zfm.com/module/Module-HOWTO-7.html ... i haven't tried any yet!

Sorry for the long post. my full dxdig of the hardware is below. please advise as you see fit.

there's no point (well, very little) bothering with redhat5.2 you should NOT proceed with it. it took me a while to figure out you meant redhat 5.2 from ~ 1998 instead of Redhat Enterprise 5.2 from 2008. Really, don't. If you want to learn a server grade linux, use centos (.org), which works exactly the same as redhat.

Seriously... that book is older than your career....

Seriously... that book is older than your career.... Top line :-)

But would my hardware (which is also older than my career) support centos? I'm limited to the hardware. Plus i was hoping once I'd got this connected to the internet to then migrate onwards & upwards until my hardware no longer worked. Hence using the older version.

ALL COMMENTS WELCOME PLEASE...

You are looking to improve your career prospects, yet looking to learn on software older than the software you do know, but is deemed too old... this is clearly really odd.

You'll find CentOS runs OK on that machine, not great, but should run to learn from. It's graphics and things like that that have problems, and that shouldn't be the focal point of any sysadmin studies. You can pick up boxes better than that (based on the glance over the specs) for a tenner in the friday ad though, and if you want to branch out for your career you have to speculate to accumulate to a certain extent.

Wink

Thanks again Chris. My initial plan was to install, configure xwindows & connect to the rest of my enviroment. then migrate & do the same until the hardware no longer supported the release. This would then give me some backwards compatability knowledge. not alot. but some. So if your ok i'll leave this open a little longer just incase someone suggests how i can overcome this issue.

I am however also downloading the iso's for centos 4.8 (as i type) but with my isps connection speed it could take hours... lol.

Note: Is that a networking post. lol. i read your post on 'what is & what isn't a networking issue' ... hopefully others will to. Thanks either way.
