Cannot connect usb cellphone modem to internet
Good day,
I have installed Ubuntu 7.10(Gutsy) on my PC. Prior to this i was using Windows Vista and i connected to the internet using my cellphone. I tried to connect with Linux but i could not do it. The settings for my cellphone only required a dial-up number with Vista. How can i do the same or how can i detect my phone and connect? I use a cable to connect my phone. |

Are you using KDE or Gnome? KDE has kppd, which is one tool to make dial-up networking easy...I'm sure Gnome has them, but I don't use know, so I can't give much guidance there. Your cell-phone probably connects via USB (just a guess), and your serial device/terminal is probably /dev/ttyUSB0 or something like that....don't know what else you have plugged in. The ttyUSB0 device will be similar to COM1 under Windows...set up your Linux dialer to use that device, plug in the phone number, name, etc., and away you go. |
I have used some sprint evdo modems and they have a nice pdf guide to set things up via kppp. Just google for "sprint mobile broadband setup guide for linux os" and the pdf is one of the first few things to come up. They pretty much step you through things but there might be some difference since you are going through a cell phone.
hope this helps |
I use Gnome so cant use kppp. How can i find out what device my cellphone modem is? I got some help and it required creating new files in the /etc/chatscripts and /etc/ppp/peers folders. I will get the pdf you mentioned and will see how it goes. Thanx.

I went through that some time ago. Hear is a link to what I posted hear. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-phone-592375/
You can use kde apps in gnome you just have to install all the dependencies and what not. I use ked with some gnome apps installed and usefull. There is an extra hit on preformance if you have old hardware, then you might not want to go that route. Hope that helps you. |
