Hi,
It is a desktop computer which has two OS, windows XP and Red Hat Linux 8.0.
The ISP is verizononline. The computer is directly connected to the modem (Westell 2200).
The connection is broadband. Internet is working fine in windows.
I tried the following commands.
adsl-setup
It has set up a connection with a inet address different from verizononline. So I cannot
connect the internet. Could you please help?

is this a static or dynamic connection?

try doing this:
as root, type ifconfig
it should give you a list of internet controlers
there might be one called eth0

if it is called eth0, try this:
ifdown eth0 <-this shuts down your card

then do this:
ifup eth0 <-this starts it up again and makes it go through the configuration

this will sorta just restart the connection and possibly force your computer to configure itself properly.

You could also try setting eth0 to DHCP (ifconfig eth0 0 -dynamic up) (I think that't how to do it). Also, you may need to type "ifconfig eth0 up/down" instead of "ifup/down". That's how it is on my Slackware box.

Thank you for your answers. The problem now is this. eth0 link is up, lo (loopback) is also up and running. eth0 is giving some inet address which replies if I ping. But when I ping 192.168.1.1 which is the ip address of my ISP gateway, it refuses to connect. The browser (mozilla) also cannot connect to any website. This is a strange problem. Any idea what is happening?

if this is the same thing as being connected to a router where you can ping all people on the same network, but can't ping anything outside the router, then ur in the same boat as me. When i'm connected through wire, i'm ok, but wireless seems to be giving me the same trouble as you. ur guess is as good as mine :-D i know, not too comforting, but ur not the only one atleast
