Question Cannot connect through Dial-Up (HSF , FC8)

HELLO GREAT PEOPLE out there,
I'm new to this forum. I like Linux and all its stuff.
I have faced an issue with Dial-Up connection.
My dial-up modem is a Conexant HSF. I installed its drivers and dialed with wvdial.
and it outputs :
Code:
# wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ4
ATZ4
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT1250
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT1250
CONNECT 115200
--> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
--> Starting pppd at Sun Mar 15 18:09:36 2009
--> Pid of pppd: 30402
--> Using interface ppp0
--> local IP address 112.134.52.182
--> remote IP address 203.115.1.143
--> primary DNS address 222.165.160.2
--> secondary DNS address 203.115.0.46
That looks okay.

BUT I cannot access to internet by Firefox or Lynx. Not even yum install .
I Turned off Firewall but Cannot even ping to the DNS.

What could possibly occurred ???
Appreciated if anyone could feel free to help me.

I'm not totally sure this applies to FC8, and I don't personally use WVDIAL, but this does apply 'generally':

See that you have a file "/etc/resolv.conf" on your system, and that it contains the IP addresses of your DNS servers, in the format:

nameserver 111.222.333.444
nameserver 111.222.333.444

That's all that should be in the file.

I use KPPP instead of WVDIAL, and KPPP automatically edits the resolve.conf file when it connects, but maybe WVDIAL does not? Anyhow, make sure the nameservers are in the file as I mentioned, and then let us know how the situation is now..

Great, you're welcome

Now, perhaps a small script would be in order, which would get executed by pppd upon connecting. The script would read the nameservers from the file that pppd creates in /etc/ppp or ~/ppp or wherever it is on your system, and automatically update your resolv.conf file each time it connects. This way, YOU would not have to keep on top of the DNS server addresses should they change some time (and they do change occasionally-- my ISP has changed their DNS addresses from time to time.)

There may also be a pppd --option to update the resolv.conf file (check the man-page for pppd), OR finally, in your rc.inet1 or similar file (the system script which configures your interfaces) you may me able to specify something like:

DHCP_KEEPRESOLV="no"

and it *might* take care of it (though I am least confident in this method).

Anyhow, if you need further help in this area, let us know.

Happy internetting!

SVA
