Cannot connect Linux to static network with several Win systems

I previously had a Debian Squeeze system on my static LAN (no router, no Internet). But the IP address changed due to some Win issues and now I cannot reconnect Linux. I have changed the IP address in etc/hosts and etc/networks, but that did not work. The LAN config changed from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.0.0.

/etc/hosts is a file to store names
/etc/networks does not define the network.

/etc/network/interfaces however does.

How can your STATIC ip change due to Windows issues? At worse just change the ip on the WIN machine. why turn your whole network upside down because of windows?
