Cannot configure lan / internet settings

dear professional,

I'm just a newbie and installed linux mandrake on my computer just a while ago. Currently I have been trying to install internet for more then 3 days now.

First I have tried the mandrake 9.1 network and internet wizzard but without any succes. Now I would like to configure it manually but I need help with doing this.

Configuration network:

2 windows computer (works great)
1 router (ip: 20.20.20.253)
1 linux computer (does not work) -> must work on dhcp

Thanks for your help....

How is you network actually configured and how do you want your linux box to connect to the net?

Waht I mean is - do you want the linux pc to connect directly to the net or via connection sharing one of the other pcs?

also, how are you testing whether it's worked or not. Are you just trying to access a web page or have you tried pinging the other computers etc?

I want to connect to the internet through LAN. This LAN has a router for internet connection.

Pinging to another computer does not work.

What's the next step?

ping localhost (ping yourself to check Ethernet card / TCP/IP stack) to check for any obvious errors.

check your ethernet cards properly installed by typing this command in console.........

/sbin/ifconfig eth0

If this is OK go to http://comtech.ncsu.edu/networking/config/Linux.html which has a good mini-guide and follow there set-up guide. If still no luck or if you've already tried all this let me know. good luck
