Can you use a linux box as a proxy from one to all ports?

Hi,

I have two computers, one linux and one osx. I also have two network connections at different sites I use to get online (LANs). One connection is firewalled, the other is not.

What I want to do is set up one computer (the osx box preferably) to allow some sort of connection from the other, and then pass on the connection as a proxy server. I don't want to just pass one type of connection over one port but all protocols over all ports. This should allow me to do things like play internet chess and online games such as warcraft 3 from the computer on the restricted network.

I think there may be a firewall between the two machines but I'm not certain about this (both subnets belong to my university). If they are not firewalled relative to each other then I think this should make the problem easier.

I don't control the network however, and can't change any router settings or anything like that.

Does anyone know of a method to set this up? Any suggestions for further research if you don't know?

Any comments about security or limiting access by ip / mac address?

Thanks!

Graham.

are there no networking gurus out there?

I didn't think this would be too difficult.

clarify for me:

external >> osx >> linux ?

are both the osx and linux connected to eachother?
is the osx the only one connected to the external?

the idea I have is that you need to set one up as a router....

Hi thanks. Here's one possible setup :

external (unrestricted) ----- mac (freebsd) ------ Linux (slack10) --------- external (restricted)

The connection to the mac is through the same network, both probably connect therough the same gateway. I've been trying to setup a socks server on the mac, which *should* allow an unblocked connection for socks aware programs (is this correct?).

The other setup would switch positions of the mac and the linux box.

If possible I'd like to use some sort of security so no other computers could use any proxy / router setup implemented.

Gir.

sorry. this goes beyond my knowlege. Sounds resonable, though.
A similar situation, which might help:
-----------------
|my network| includes coyote linux router (two cards) which links to =
----------------- -----------------------
|external network|
| (and internet) |
-----------------------

note that this is a one way connection.

hope this helps

I'm getting close I think, I can pipe a ssh connection so that an app can connect via localhost which seems to work quite well, also I'm thinking of running an x app but piping it through the ssh tunnel, to give the same effect as the forwarding (but really the app is running on the other machine).
