Having finally got my wireless card working under Linux, it's time to do battle with Samba.
I've spent a fair amount of time playing with the config settings all to no avail - this isn't helped by the fact that the two laptops I'm trying to use with the Linux desktop (one running Win2K and one running WinXP) both re-act differently to the samba server.
All I'm trying to do is share a couple of folders (preferrably with no password prompts) and a printer - giving the same outward appearence to the Windoze machines of basic of the old Windoze XP setup that I'm trying to replace.
Any links that can simplify things beyond the blurb in the samba docs would be much appreciated.
try configuring it with webmin, this is a nice easy graphical interface. Or, if you would like you can post your config file here and we can have a look at it to point out some possible issues.
Simplest and easiest way (but not secure at all) is to make these changes to smb.conf and restart samba:
guest account = <something> <- The line is probably there, maybe with default values, maybe commented out.. Uncomment it and change the <something> user to a username that exists on the Linux box and will have rights to read/write from the dir you want to share.
security = share <- It might be on user by default, or the line might not be there at all.. Add it if so.
On the shares themselves, something like this:
[stuff]
comment = some stuff im sharing
path = /somedir
public = yes
guest ok = yes
writable = yes
Good to go.... After you get this going you might want to rea up on things like making Samba a domain controller to better control security, etc... That gets quite a bit deeper though so you might want to settle for this for now.
