Can port 25 be opened without a SMTP server installed?

I am a newbie so please help even if this is a stupid question. I am trying to use a redhat 7.3 machine as a firewall. I uninstalled sendmail because I have a mail server inside the firewall. When I run netstat -an, port 25 is not listed. Is there a way to open port 25 without having an smtp server installed?

Yes there is a way to have port 25 open if an smtp server is not installed but I don't understand why you would want that? I think what you want to do is make sure your firewall forwards all requests to port 25 to your mail server.

Thanks. I thought that if a port wasn't displayed as being open that nothing coould listen on it either.
