Can ping box to box thru router - good sign?
 

Extreme newbie here.
I can ping box "a" from box "b" and vise versa through this "iblitzz netwave base" router.
I can use a browser on either box to contact the router and open the on board config utility for it.

-a. Is this a good sign?
-b. If so, How good?
-c. Is it virtually assured that this router will allow me to connect to my adsl modem and on to the internet once configured?

I am trying to start simple. This router supports both wired and wireless Ethernet.
I am starting with wired, and the two computers that I had already been using in a direct ethernet cable LAN, this way I know the on board nic's are working because I've used them for ssh, nfs and internet connection sharing.

I do not absolutely have to use this particular router, but sure would like to because it will be a freebie if I can use it.

I have been reading but don't understand what settings to apply where.
The how-to's on Ldp are not simple enough for me to know what should apply to my particular setup.

If I have chosen an OK setup to start learning/configuring my LAN through router to adsl modem to internet connections, please help me get started configuring.

If a different setup would be better, let me know.

Iblitzz website which model is it?

I didnt see any mention of linux on thier website, if thats what I was supposed to be looking for, so I called them. The guy said " I think you can make it work with linux but we dont provide support for it".

I've tried looking this iblitzz up on compatibillity sites but so far havent been able to find my way around the site well enough to say if its there or not.

Is there 1 definitive compatibility site for me to look at?

Ok I had some one tell me that routers just work. Its only a matter of proper address configuration. No special drivers needed on my computer for any particular router.

Is this accurate? If so I'll go back to banging heads with this thing post haste.

Basically yes. There may be the odd exception such as the apple airport that needs a apple computer to configure it. Your has a web interface for configuring it.

there isnt any compatibility issues with routers, as long as they support tcp-ip (which they mostly do). The only cases of incompatibility is when they have a printer port or something like that.

Should I remove the existing pppoe stuff from my computer so the pppoe stuff thats built into the router will work?
If so is there any 1 pppoe package I should leave or should it be ok to remove all packages that turn up when search for "pppoe"

you don't need pppoe anymore when you use a router. they do the ppoe work for you and they provide you with clean and simple ethernet. Usually, all you need is use a dynamic address and everything should work, as long as you router config is ok.

Please help figure out why I cant connect to internet through router.
I can open the routers control panel with a browser on my computer.

I assume you have a windows machine as well. Does that work through the router?

I assume 192.168.1.254 is the router
From your tcpdump log it looks like you have 192.168.0.254 set as a nameserver? Your router is not acting as a resolving domain name server.
You probably need to set the ip's of you ISP's nameservers in mandrakes
config program or in /etc/resolv.conf
You can get the ip's from ipconfig /all on windows.

That may not be the only problem.
Try using a web browser to visit http://66.218.71.198/ and http://64.179.4.146 (yahoo and linuxquestions)

Routing table looks ok, just to make sure show us the output
of traceroute 207.183.36.4
The first hop should be the router.

How bizarre is this?
I haven't booted windows since I got mandy 9.1 bout 3 months ago. Apparently I haven't missed it because it never dawned on me to fire it up for purpose of troubleshooting router connection.

Anyhow I took zaphodrv's idea to check router with windows and it worked after bout an hour of monkeying around. I copied "ipconfig" so I could try to use the info in mandrake and booted to mandrake.

My internet connection through router started automatically when mandrake started !?
How did that happen? I didn't configure the router when I was in windows except to hit the "restore factory defaults", something I had done at least a few times while in mandrake, to no avail.

A couple of more questions:

Are wireless nic cards specific to routers? In other words do I have to use an iblitzz wireless nic card with this iblitzz router?

Is the hostname "warpner" some kind of windows default name? I've never heard of it that I can remember, but there it is.

What does the "lease expires" stuff mean.

warpner is the netbios name of your machine.. you probably saw it on install, it looks like an automatically-generated name

lease expires is the duration of the DHCP lease. It is far more complex than that, but, basically, when the lease is about to expires, it is automatically renewed with the DHCP server.
