Can not ping linux (Mandrake 10.0) server from XP machine but:
- Can ping XP from Linux system
- Can telnet (finnally) from XP machine to the Linux system
check your subnet masks. they should be the same on both systems.
try to ping direcly by IP-address and not by a symbolic name.
check TCP/IP filtering on the XP system: should be disabled for testing
(network adapter properties - TCP/IP - advanced - options.
quick recap. Can ping from my mandrake system but can not ping it even though I can telnet and ssh to it.
thinking this could be hw problem (although when i run win98 on this machine can ping the machine) so I am not going to worry as can telnet and ssh to the machine.
wondering though to get telnet and sshd to work had to add
ALL:192.168.2. to my hosts.allow folder.
(my internal network is 192.168.2.x)
wondering are there any special permissions needed for mandrake to reply to pings.
(and my winxp system has no problem pinging other machines)
I was installing lotus Domino server on my Ubuntu box.I had the same problem as urself. I turnoff my Firewall on the network card for the XP workstation. I received a reply.
The telnet functionality uses port 80=http traffic. Port 80 is always available.
Thanks guys you fixed my problem.
