Question Can't ssh from internet

Well this is quite embarrassing. I've managed to setup a slackware 13.37 as a server (ssh / ftp / samba).

Now I can use filezilla to connect to the machine using sftp but I can't use ssh from my bash shell.

Here is the output of $ssh -v username@dyndns:xxx

OpenSSH_5.8p1 Debian-1ubuntu3, OpenSSL 0.9.8o 01 Jun 2010
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: Applying options for *
ssh: Could not resolve hostname xxxx:xxx Name or service not known

If I type $ssh username@server_name (LAN connection), I can connect normally (after giving the proper password).

Since I can connect using filezilla, I'm sure that the gateway is correctly configured (firewall and port forwarding). What am I missing?

Any suggestion(s) ?

Hi,

Why are you using the :xxx part in your command (ssh -v username@dyndns:xxx)?

If you need to set a specific/alternate port you need to use the -p option (ssh -v -p xxx username@dyndns).

You also mention sftp, maybe you are looking for the scp command? ssh is used to log into another machine and get a shell, scp is used to securely copy files from/to another host.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Glad to see you got this fixed/cleared up.

That "mix-up" is understandable as that notation is used, among other places, in browser url's

BTW: You're welcome!
