Can't see Samba from Windows XP!!!
I'm pretty new to Linux and trying to get samba service going on my RH 9.
OK, I am trying to setup a very simple file server using samba. Right now, I have one box with Windows XP(XP), and the other with RH 9(RH). I've connected them with Peer-Peer using Static IP using 4way switch. (I want to start out simple) I've started SMB service and I can see with XP and RH under SMB:///. So everything is going well, and I try to access RH from XP. It tells me I can't access, because I don't have permission. So I checked "Network place" in XP, and cannot see RH. I reboot XP and it just show up out of blue. Reboot it again, it disappears. What should I need to do to keep showing RH on my network place? Also how can I get access to RH from XP? Why am I not permitted to access? I have created User and smbuser, which has same user name and password as Windows XP. I've also added a few line to /etc/hosts. Firewall on both XP and RH is disabled. I've created directory /share and made it available to public. I know this question has been asked by many people before and there is an answer somewhere out there. But I've been working on this a few days already, and would like to see some results. Thanks! |
I remember there being a registry thing. XP sends the logon authentication encrypted and you have to change XP to make it send the authenication un-encrypted. Googel "XP Samba Authenication" and see what comes up.
I either got the guide by searching google or searching here. |
winXP takes a lot of time for worklgroup to come up
if u have set samba correclty u can access that RH machine directly with the IP address or host name in windows do this in any window other that IE //<ipaddress> //<machine name> regards |
Actually, that's what I've been doing when I can't see the RH from XP. Just using \\192.168.0.x
It still does not like it! I'll have to look into authentication issue. It sound more promising than many information I've read. |
