I recently installed Fedora 17 on 2 of my machines. Both fresh installations. Neither machine will ping by host name anything on the local network they return only outside ip addresses. I primarily want to use samba to transfer files. All my local hosts appear under the network servers but are unable to open.
Any help would be appriceated.

# The entry '[NOTFOUND=return]' means that the search for an

# Valid entries include:
#
# nisplus Use NIS+ (NIS version 3)
# nis Use NIS (NIS version 2), also called YP

I have 3 windows machines and 2 Linux fc17 machines plus 1 fc16 and 2 iomega nas units on my network. Not including the router dvr's net-tv etc. 18 nodes in all. One of the Linux machines, the fc16 works perfectly as do the windows machines. The code responsible for finding the ip/netbios pairs is either not working or mis-configured. Problem is i don't know what piece of code/service/whatever it is. If i did, i could isolate it in the hosts section of nsswitche.conf and proceed to find out why it's not working. nslookup will happily match up any host to the wrong outside ip. So as you said the dns is working. In fc16 the wins mnemonic in that file was the one. In fc17 it's something else. No wins server involved it is just the mnemonic for fc16 to use broadcast as well as wins and other methods to find the pair. I am pretty sure the broadcast method is my networks choice when it comes to netbios/samba name resolution. Firewalls and selinux is off on all but the windows machines. The hosts file is clean as i use dhcp for all the pc's.
Sorry i am not clearer in what i am trying to say.
Samba is installed with the addition of all files with samba in the description. I feel that nmb should be doing the name resoloution as the nmbscan -a command yelds the following

All of the ip's and shares are correct. I dont believe that i need to add any name servers or load the hosts file with what would be dynamic ip's.
The folder under the network servers icon is full of the correct host it's just that clicking on all but self gives no results.
How about booting to some live cd on this box? Use one that is known to use samba, most of them do. It should just work. If so then we need to figure out what is wrong on the F17.
I have got it 1/2 working. I added wins in the host section of the nsswitch.conf file and bang all but two of the hosts are working. I am sure they are soon to follow. i do have something funny going on with the on line functions, web browser going to suddenlinks search page The location within the hosts section of the nsswitch.conf file is probably the culprit.
hosts: files wins mdns4_minimal dns zoneminder [NOTFOUND=return]
This is the current arrangement, any suggestions?
I loaded the fedora 17 live cd and checked the arrangement of the nsswitch.conf file and found it to be as above with the exception if the wins entry. The computer did not see any network hosts. But it did know there was a work group and it's proper name.
I think i will load a live cd of ubuntu as it seems happier with windows.
I did a live disk boot of ubuntu and fedora 17. Both of them worked exactly the same as my present problem. That is to say that The network folder shows 1 machine but i cannot access the shares on it. It does not show the additional hosts on the network unless I add the wins to the nsswitch.conf With the wins entry added I can browse and open shares on all but two machines. Unfortunately with wins added FireFox behaves abnormally, not finding random web pages and not being able post to to websites.
wins or not samba or part of the samba install has a way to resolve cifs or windows workgroup names by netbios. It is possible that in some server setup's you'd resolve name via ip to ad controller but you didn't mention this.
Hi,
I have been searching for my problem this weekend and have found nothing. i did however rerun testparm on my machine and found the following. I was wondering if that is a problem or just a report on its activities I can't find rlimit_max in any form in the config file.
Code:
[root@zoneminder ~]# testparm /etc/samba/smb.conf
Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf
rlimit_max: increasing rlimit_max (1024) to minimum Windows limit (16384)

This problem seems only to be with FC17 since all my windows and my lone f16 machine work via samba with no problems. It seems like it should be a problem for others. The only thing i see that makes my two machines special is that they are both fresh installs of fc17. Why the Ubuntu and fc17 live cd's do not find the others is beyond me.
