Can't print from windows 7 - Samba Printer Share

Hi all

I'm giving up in ever hoping that I'll get printing working with windows 7 with the strange comments I've found on the net.

Basically I have a samsung ML2240 printer shared on the network, everything can print to it fine except for my windows 7 laptop. It's shared via Samba.

Once you have extracted the driver files, copy the 32-bit drivers to the /usr/share/cups/drivers directory and the 64-bit drivers to the /usr/share/cups/drivers/x64 directory exactly as named below:

[Windows 2000 and higher]
ps5ui.dll
pscript.hlp
pscript.ntf
pscript5.dll
However after checking this, I dont have the files named within inthe correct folder on my windows system : %WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\DRIVERS\X64\3 folder for 64-bit drivers.

I've tried installing the printer via the windows installer, however this adds the driver then tells me its not working and fails to print.

I really dont know where to turn with this one. I've tried installing the samsung supplied drivers from the website. However they still fail to connect.

:(

I have a similar setup, different printer though. My daughter got a new laptop with Win 7 lately. It wouldn't print until I fought with Win 7. I had to edit the hosts file on Win 7 and add the IP's of the other systems on the home network. You have to have an admin account to do it in Win 7.

I also saw some information saying you could not use a 'Homegroup' ( some new stuff Micro$ has stuffed into Win 7 ). It took me some time to find the old way of doing things on Win 7. ie making sure that system was in the same workgroup as my samba servers. I have 3, and that system can work with all 3, including printing.

It seems you have your server set up the correct way, if others can print to it. The driver on Win 7 should be the one supplied by Samsung for your printer.

Well samba is working on the laptop as I'm able to access all my shares etc, Its just printing that doesn't work

I've tried installing the samsung universal driver, and also a driver specifically for my printer but nither of these then allowed me to use the networked printer.

I'm thinking there is some way you can have cups provide the printer driver?

Not to the best of my knowledge.

The windows drivers should work. When you installed the printer, did you install it as a remote printer? Could you browse to see it when it was added?

If you run a print job, have a look in the print queue on windows. Is the job there? Then look on the samba sever, at cups. Does the job arrive there?

My problem is that the my PC, Ubuntu 10.04, failed to install the drivers of my printer Canon inkjet iP1800.

My install CD I use in Windows 7 - I had also to move the files to the x86 folder.

Can you please help?
