can't ping gateway


Hello,

I am installing a new machine with RH8, but I am having problems connecting to the internet. When I try to ping my gateway '203.128.55.1' I get a "destination not reachable" error.

netstat -rn:

It appears from ifconfig that no traffic is going through my card at all. Any suggestions for how I can diagnose and correct the problem would be much appreciated.

Try pinging with a size of 0 (ping -s 0). Maybe the MSS is too small.

perhaps your ping is not being able to resolve the name ...
i also had a similar problem..
make sure your name server is configures..
in your network device settings, put the ip and name of your name server in the dns tab of modem configuration
just to be double sure...
edit the /etc/resolv.conf and put the line
nameserver <ip-address of the nameserver>
should work out...
hopefully..mine did....

Thanks for the replies.

'ping -s 0 *' gives me the same problem. Also, my dns stuff is configured correctly - but I can't ping the dns either (and I think I should be able to contact machines via numeric address even without dns).

I am beginning to suspect hardware failure. I have three ethernet interfaces - 1 100Mb and 2 Gig. When I configure to use either of the gig interfaces (same card on each), ifconfig shows that traffic is flowing through the card. I figure that those interfaces don't work because I'm connecting a gig card to a 100Mb jack without a switch.

Is there any way to test my 100Mb card without replacing it? Or am I overlooking any further software diagnostics?
