Angry can't ping beyond my ISPs ppp server

I have just installed Red Hat 9 on a dual boot system with Win XP. I am trying to get cannected to the internet via a Fujitsu FDX310 ADSL USB modem to Pipex. This set up works fine on the Win XP OS on the same box. I found a version of the EciAdsl driver which has the VP/VC set to 0/38 for the UK and have downloaded, compiled and installed this successfully.

After issueing the startmodem command, the modem powers on and syncs ok and I am successfully logged on tp Pipex (i think)! The startmodem command displays the successful negotiation and the ip addresses, both remote and local and the DNS ip addresses. From the command line I can successfully ping the remote ppp server (and my own local ip address) but cannot ping anything else, including the DNS server - I can do this under Windows. As I can't see the DNS, I can't browse or see the internet.

I am a newbie to Linux so I suspect there is some configuration problem on my system. However, there seem to be numerous config files so I am looking for some help in sorting them all out.

Can you ping using IP Addresses? try a traceroute to linuxquestions (64.179.4.14).

Could be a problem at the ISP.

No, as I said, I can only ping the ppp server (the remote ip address as reported by startmodem) by address only. I cannot even ping the DNS by address. This is ok on Windows but not on Linux which leads me to believe it is a Linux config issue.

ppuru,

That was the clue I needed! When I did route -n it showed that the gateway was not set up (0.0.0.0) whereas it should have the same address as my isp ppp server. In looking for how to set this I discovered that the network configuration gui has a means to set up the ppp device for a DHCP provided DNS and once I set this it started to work.

A slightly different problem now - download bandwidth, as measured on www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedchart.asp, is as expected ~ 450 Kbps BUT upload speed is only 3 Kpbs!! The line is ADSL 512 Kbps download, 256 Kbps upload. Under Windows I get slightly better download of 468 Kbps but the upload is much more reasonable at 243 Kbps. So it looks like there is another configuration issue that is severely limiting my upload bandwidth. Any ideas where to look?

Thanks,
