I'm tring to build the latest Kernel, and I'd like to update my Iptables and include a patch I need one time. However, when I do the make for Iptables, I can't see anything particularly going on on the screen, altought the normal signs of a command in progress are present.
I've tried leaving it overnight, but then th command stil doesn't finish.
Any ideas or recommendations woudl eb much appreciated.
Well I think it's safe to say I have a fair understanding of the make process. Hence why I'm even more bewildered. Unfortunately I have bigger problems now...so that battle has been put to a side.
But for my own knowledge, can the latest Iptables compile against the latest kernel?
Yes, iptables-1.2.9 will compile with linux-2.6.5.
I didn't mean to imply I thought you didn't understand the make process. I just want to make sure we are both talking about the same iptables, because there is the userspace stuff and the kernel stuff.
Are you patching the userspace iptables or are you patching the kernel?
Also did you check your version of make?
Another thing to check is while make is doing it's thing open another terminal and run ps -ax.
Ah, take no offense a dear friend of mine is very ill (my server linux box) so I'm not in the best of moods. I do have a up to date version of make, altough at this point and time i can't be 100% sure.
Since I have not yet understood the userspace/kernel business of which you're now informing me, I'll just tell you what I intended to do, at least that way I'll learn exactly what you're talking about.
I need to do h323 NAT, and that's only available from pathomatic, so I presumed that to use the latest patchomatic I should also use the latest Iptables. So I dloaded the sources for both and tried to make Iptables...that's where the probs came up.
OK you are trying to add an extension to the kernels netfilter code. So you are going to run patch-o-matic which will patch your kernel sources and then you will have to build a new kernel. You don't necessarily have to build a new iptables "userspace" program, but it is always a good idea to keep it up-to-date.
Have you looked at this documentation for patch-o-matic?
Well no I haven't checked that doc before, so thanks alot for it. I wil give it a good read. But I have done this process beofre with Kernel 2.4.22 it was my first time so it took awhile to get the kernel options correct, but the iptables and extension were a breeze.
