Can't login remotely using SSH or Telnet

I can't seem to login to my Linux machine from another PC on my home network. Both machines are connected (using cat5 cable) to my network via a Linksys WRT54G router.

When I check the IP address for the Linux box using the DHCP Clients Table, I can see that it's IP address is 192.168.1.117.

The machine I'm trying to connect from is a Dell 400SC running MS XP Home. Every time I try to connect, I get the following message:

"Connecting To 192.168.1.117...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed".

Also, I can "ping" the Linux box from my XP machine without a problem.

What should I be checking to figure out this problem? I'm not sure if it's a firewall issue on the Linux machine or something that I need to set up on my network.

Be sure that you have set up SSH and that firewall is not blocking the needed port.

I disabled the firewall on my XP Home machine, my Linux machine and the router. Also, I checked to see if the SSH service running and it appears to be running fine.

However, when I try connect via SSH or Telnet, I still get the same message that the connection failed.

Is there anyway to see if the correct port is indeed open? I don't know that much about networking or ports or how they function.

What SSH client on the XP box? PuTTY? That can be configured to generate copious logs to aid debugging (e.g. Log all session or Log all SSH packet data options available).

Port 23 is your telnet attempt? (as SSH uses Port 22).

I tried SSH again. This time using a program called SecureCRT from Vandyke Software. Now, when I select SSH2 as the protocol using port 22, I can successfully connect to my Linux machine. I'm not sure why it wasn't working the 1st time through but thanks for the help.
