Can't get modem to dial-up into ISP.

Hey all,

I'm trying to dial into my ISP using KPPP and everything seems to work until it gets dial-tone, I can hear the dial-tone, but for some reason the modem won't dial and it just sits there until I get that "your phone has been off the hook for too long" tone.

I'm running the following system:

Mandriva 2006.0 Limited Edition Free
with kernel 2.6.12-12mdk
on a genuine Intel i686 (P2-266mhz MMX)
(I realize the system is going to run slow because my distro prefers a minimal P3)

I have a Conexant HSF Winmodem PCI (Chipset 14f1:2016)
I've already installed the Linuxant HSF drivers appropriate to my distro and kernel.

Via KPPP I can access the modem at either /dev/modem/ or /dev/ttyHSF0/ . I've tried all of the ttys channels and the rest of the ttyHSF channels and only the two listed above work. /dev/ttys0/ will connect to the modem but the modem doesn't get past the ATZ command.

With the /dev/modem/ or /dev/ttyHSF0/ channels the modem completely initializes and access the phone line getting dial-tone, but once it gets there, the modem stops and never dials the number.

I am trying to access AOL via KPPP since they don't make a program for Linux and honestly I don't really want one. If the ISP is the reason I can't get the modem to dial, then please suggest some Dial-Up ISPs that are inexpensive and accessible to the Baltimore-area of Maryland, specifically Harford County.

Also, I am dialing the numbers in 10-digit form (123-456-7890) minus the hyphens. If I need to add a one to the begining (1+123-456-7890) then let me know or if I need to add any other telephone code. Please e-mail me at my personal e-mail and state that you are responding to my thread from this website in the subject line referencing yours and my SNs.

Thank You All

Can you dial ANYTHING with your modem? If you can get any dials out at all, this might help. Even if you can't, it might still help. Sorry I couldn't be of further assistance, but I lack both a dial modem and a phone line. Good luck!

Mandriva Limodem

I have a similar system and had problems with setting up Linmodem. I installed wvdial and can now dial out on wvdial but browsers do not see connection......at least I know my modem driver is working????

Details of wvdial can be found at
