Unhappy can't connect to my suse server from outside

HI guys,
I can't connect to my home server from the internet outside.
I was using some box with suse 8 with no connection problems from the internet.
I just open lets say port 22 under my DSL modem and thats all.
Now I have a new box with suse linux 9.1 with all the updates (kernel 2.6.5) but cant connect from the outside. My server has a static IP and my DSL modem has a DHCP IP and that is the one I use for connection. Better yet, I have a WinXP laptop and when I open the ports in my modem for my lap it just works with no problems.
I have no firewall in my suse box. I do have a connection to the internet but not from the outside. Im not sure if its my box, suse or my DSL modem. Any ideas?
Basically, Im trying to open 8080 and 22 ports. I have read some problems like mine but the difference is that I dont use my box as a router. Also I do can connect to any port of my suse box within my home network with no problems.

Thx in advance,
- EL chapulincolorado

does your dsl modem have port forwarding? or does it simply open a port? most modems/routers let you specifcy which internal ip differnt internet traffic should be forwarded to. btw what error message are you getting when you try to connect? host not found? connection refused? invalid login?
