Can't connect to mail server

I'm having problem in my mail. My mail aaplication is thunderbird with this settings:

incoming server: pop3.xxx.net
outgoing server: smtp.xxx.net
pop port:995
smtp port:465
using SSL

Everytime I try to getmail in thunderbird...."cannot connect to pop3.xxx.net" appears.

I've opened port 995,465,110,25 in the iptables.
I have squid running.

Strange, why are you using those port numbers?

Standard POP port is 110, standard SMTP port is 25 (on most configs...)

Are you sure you are using the right port numbers for your particular mailserver?

yup....it was given by the person in charge of our mail server.....
and once i select the SSL in thunderbird security settings...it appears as the default port....

do i need to do some port redirection for such smtp and pop3 ports?
