Can't Connect to internet with Mandrake 9.1

I am new to Linux and decided to start out with the latest version of Mandrake.

Everything installed fine for me. But it just so happens that for some reason it wont connect to the internet. I tried auto configuring it. I tried manually configuring it and I had no luck since I have no idea what I am doing.

I have a syntax mobo with an embedded Realtek RTL8139 ethernet. I checked the driver and linux has the right one it seems. But it still won't work.

I have no idea what to do. Also I should mention that I use a router so I don't know if that creates any problems. My router doesen't have any very strict firewall settings to my knowledge.

Is there a way to get a Text based log of what my system is doing when it trys to auto config in the control center? Beacause the graph it shows has no data moving at all.

If anyone could help that would be great!

Try these:

You might want to try to disable apic

But first of all, you shuld be using the 8139too module, right??

Diable APIC:

Since you are using MDK 9.1, do this to disable APIC. Using KDE, go into the panel, and hit run command. Type in the combo box:

Code:
kedit
Then, hit the details button and check the run as different user box. Then go down and enter your root password and click run

Then open:

Code:
 /etc/lilo.conf
First back it up, then...

Edit your linux entry that has label = "linux" (it should be the first entry) to include noapic in the append line. There should be some other stuff too, just add noapic before quiet

here's an example:

Code:
image=/boot/vmlinuz
	label="linux"
	root=/dev/hda3
	initrd=/boot/initrd.img
	append="devfs=mount hdd=ide-scsi acpi=off noapic quiet"
	vga=788
	read-only
Be sure to type lilo at the console to activate your changes and reboot

I've read, however not experienced that the realtek cards are somewhat buggy with apic support

To get a view of all the system messages you might want to try this:

Code:
dmesg
Also try:

Code:
ifconfig
Hope that helps.

Perhaps some other linux guru's can help you out too

Lol. On my desktop, I had the same problem. Quite simply, it is not using DHCP/Bootp at startup. Right now I can't give you instructions on how to do that (you can do it through the wizard I think.) but I will asap. I need to go get sleep.. 2:00am.. classes tomarrow.. argh...

First check the router manual and find which IP it is defaulting to, this will be your default Gateway. Also check if router will assign IP (dhcp) or do you need to set static IP's for your NIC.

Make sure the NIC module is loading by typing lsmod and look for 8139too module. If the module is not there add this line to /etc/modules.conf alias eth0 8139too then type modprobe 8139too.

Now start Mandrake Control Center -> Network & Internet. Use the Wizard to configure your NIC.
