can't connect network from HD but can from CD

Lost the ability while using Hardy 64. Have since tried Gutsy, Intrepid, and Jaunty. All work from CD but none worked from HD (two DS, two releases on each) until late yesterday. Then this morning, after no operator action except trying to get to the internet, the ability was gone again. If this happened from one HD or from both and CD it would make more sense. Same thing with the inappropriate display driver given by an unsolicited update--can't get beyond 800x600, and installing new releases hasn't helped. I feel as if Hardy has somehow taken complete control of the computer.

Are you connecting from ethernet or wireless? Can you post your ifconfig from both CD and HD? And, are you logging in as root? I don't understand how an unsolicited update could occur without root password.

Wireless went down with the 8-day power outage after Hurricane Gustav. Ethernet went down a couple of weeks ago and the user in having a hard time running from CD (all he does is e-mail and maintaining a few personal text files).

I was having trouble getting both ifconfigs in files I could attach to this reply, but in trying I found that the eth1 and 2 ifconfigs (eth0 is a failed built-in NIC) are the same as the one for ath0. Now all I have to do in change them, but I can't thivk how. This may have happened when I was trying to get wireless up (and stop having to run a 30-ft cable across the hall). Any help on changing the eth config will be appreciated. Thanks!

I found on closer inspection that CD and HD versions of ifconfig are not quite identical. Ath0 is not applicable since it shut down in August and I have update OS since then, partly in efforts to get wireless up again. I got as fap as scanning but never connected. I had to bring a laptop into the room and key in everything in the eth2 and eth1 listings. I also did sudo ifconfig eth2 up/eth1 down. Eth2 in the newer, bought because I suspected that eth1 had gone bad.

The ethernet connection has worked for two periods of a few hours each, then gone bad overnight (no shutdown or reboot). These two periods were a couple of days apart.

From CD:
eth2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:09:c4:05:45
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
Interrupt:16 Base address:0x2d00
(exactlylike eth1 in the other comupter, which is connecting; also has a
non-functioning eth0, except for the addresses)

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:da:56:84:97
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:352 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:1 frame:0
TX packets:103 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:38366 (38.3 KB) TX bytes:8541 (8.4 KB)
Interrupt:17 Base address:0x4e80

From HD:
The same except that the RX and TX packets and bytes are all 0, and the addresses are
different.

do this: /etc/init.d/network restart (might me different since ubuntu, but debian that's how it is...)

then do your ifconfig eth2 up

then post ifconfig eth2

Also, might just be intermittent crappiness from Gustav and the telecom companies.

I did sudo etc/init.d/networking restart (tthere in no "network" in init.d now), then
sudo ifconfig eth2 up and ifconfig eth2, which I copied:
Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:da:5b:84:97
inet6 addr: fe80::250:daff:fe5b:8497/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:9 errore:0 dropped:0 overruns:4 frame:0
TX packets:7 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:2444 (2.4 KB) TX bytes:528 (528.0 B)
Interrupt:17 Base address:0xe80

This, of course, was running on the hard disk (jaunty in the only release working well on that machine, but it has failed to connect using feisty, gutsy, hardy, and intrepid in the post-Gustav period). I am using intrepid on the other desktop box with fewer problems than with hardy (latest version). Still no connection. I tried ifconfig eth2 down, then back up, and the listing now shows no line beginning inet6. I also tried /etc/init.d/NetworkManager, with no change there either.

What I find puzzling is that every installation of Kubuntu pciks up the same problem, but booting from CD doesn't. Maybe it's like the video driver that hardy wanted me to change after it was working ifne as was, and it's still at 800x600 and I can't change it, Someone sent me something to try, which I haven't done yet, but stated that it would be better to use the correct driver. I would do that if I knew how to find it. I don't think vVidia or Sony have put out Linux drivers and I don't know if it's worth using ndilwrapper. I think I tried CrossoverOffice for one of the windows drivers, and when it failed to install concluded that drivers go to too low a level for Crossover, which I have been using for years to run QuickBooks.

huh. okay,

try sudo dhclient after you have eth2 giving you what you showed me. Post what it says. If it works, you probably need to add it to your modules.

sudo gedit /etc/modules

and add: dmfe

then sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

and add: blacklist tulip

If it doesn't work...

give me:

sudo lshw -C network
cat /etc/resolv.conf

And is your default gateway set to eth0/1/2?

can't connect to network from HD but can from CD

dhclient did the trick. I had wondered about it before I got up but then got dintracted by an iced-over heat pump.

After rebooting as a test, I had to enter dhclient again in order to get back on the network. I had entered the module as you suggested but it didn't work. Compared to using CD to get to the network, this is a very minor problem, but here is the dhclient listing:

$sudo iwconfig

you probably will have to do iwconfig eth* up

then configure your wlan with the wireless monitor in the taskbar.
