Can't connect.

Originally I had a Netgear FA311 fitted but this was not compatible with Linux so I have now fitted a D-Link DFE-530T which is supposed to be compatible Linux.

This card works with no problems with windows XP which is my other OS.

I have gone into sudo lspci “00:09.0 Ethernet controller : D-Link system inc DGE-528-T Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (Rev10) So I take it from this it knows that the card is fitted?

Also went in to Sudo dmesg chris@chris-desktop:~$ sudo dmesg
[17179569.184000] Linux version 2.6.17-10-generic (root@vernadsky) (gcc version 4.1.2 20060928 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.1-13ubuntu5)) #2 SMP Fri Oct 13 18:45:35 UTC 2006 (Ubuntu 2.6.17-10.33-generic)“[17179590.352000] r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.2LK loaded”

The CD that came with the card has Linux drivers kernel2.2 and 2.4 But I admit that I do not know how to install these drivers. I also think that these will be no good as my kernel is 2.6.

So can anyone help and give me advise what to do I am very knew to Linux and have not much knowledge in programming. I would really like to get Ubuntu to work so in time I can make this my main OS and dump windows.

Netgear FA311 doesn't work with Linux? That's new - I've been using them with Linux for years. How do you know it's not compatible?

There is no "eth0" interface setup by the looks of it. Perhaps there is not DHCP server on your network, so when it tried to lease an address, it failed and dumped the whole interface.

Is there a DHCP server on your network to hand out IP addresses?

can't connect using Linksys

I just set up Linux and even though Mozilla says there is a connection it says it can't find website; any website! Is there a compatibilty issue with Linksys?

Can I suggest you start a new thread for that swilkie and we can help you troubleshoot...

Save this thread for helping russianspy with their problem :)

I am running duel boot system windows xp is my other OS and can connect to the internet with no problems. Have looked at my connection settings and it shows. "Address type Assigned DHCP" It also shows my IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DHCP Server and DNS server addresses. This is of course only shows these deatails when I am in XP.

Well the reason I changed my Netgear card was I was having the same problem as I am now. When it was recommended that I change my Ethernet card. I looked on the netgear site and it stated on there my card did not support linux, it was quite old so that is what prompted me to change cards.

fukawi2 02-21-2007 03:34 PM

They mean they don't support their card on Linux :P

I don't know about the other card, but if you're having the same problem, then I'd suggest it isn't the card that's causing the problem...

russianspy 02-21-2007 03:43 PM

Yes I can not understand why, would my ISP have anything to do with it?

acid_kewpie 02-21-2007 04:00 PM

no, this *nothing* to do with *anything* other than your Linux PC and your NIC. once you are out on the network, it's just another IP device. it seems that you just need to use the bog standard natsemi driver, which is a standard on any recent distribution.

if that card is now history anyway, then you still should be able to get the new card going without too much trouble. you can try to make things a bit simpler by (temporarily) assigning a static IP address in the configuration files and see what comes up when no external information is required at all.

russianspy 02-22-2007 01:16 PM

I am sorry if this may sound stupid but could you explain how I would go about setting up a static IP address and where. Would I use the IP Address f I get when connected to the internet when using Windows XP? I am very new to Linux so this is all new to me.

fukawi2 02-22-2007 03:21 PM

Your IP address is the unique number that identifies your computer on your local network. Can you post the output from ipconfig in Windows?

Click Start > Run > Type 'cmd' > OK
Then type 'ipconfig' and hit enter then port that output here... (type everything without the quotes! :) )

russianspy 02-22-2007 04:06 PM

Windows IP Configuration

Subnet mask...........:255.255.255.0
Default gateway.......:82.47.110.1

fukawi2 02-23-2007 08:12 AM

Interesting....

I've never seen that before - you have an entire /24 subnet in the public IP range...

What type of internet connection do you have? Is that PC connected directly to your internet connection, or is it connected to the local network and the internet is connected to that? Windows works fine with the internet?

russianspy 02-23-2007 12:25 PM

Yes my PC is connected directly to my internet connection. I have a cable connection 10meg My computer is connect to the net by ethernet card/cable to a webstar epc2100 series cable modem. Yes windows has always work fine with my old card and this new one, have never had a problem.

russianspy 02-23-2007 02:43 PM

I do not know if this means anything but I found these two files.
linux.debian.bugs.dist.dbx 331kb
linux.debian.maint.boot.dbx 203kb
I found both files in outlook express messages

I can not open these files but the reason I think they may help? Is because they appeared on the day and time I installed Ubuntu.
