Can't boot past system trying to initiate PPP

Although I have been successful in the past in getting PPP up and running, today, I am in a mess.

It started when, using KDE, I was unable to get Mozilla to find any URL that I typed in the Address field. The box that indicates that I am connected showed up in the upper Left corner of my screen with a green dot in it (black dot = not connected, green dot = connected). And when I try to disconnect, I get a message "disconnect was not successful", even though I could lift up my phone and hear a dial tone. If I logged of and restarted X, then clicked on the menu item internet>ppp dialer the box with the green dot would appear, but Mozella still could not find any URL that I typed (I have used the URLs successfully many times in the past).
So I edited wvdial.conf. Here is the file after I edited it, as close as I can recall:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = /dev/ttyS2
Baud = 115200
Init1 = ATZ
Phone = 6831223
Username = rdaves@earthlink.net
Password = mypassword
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My boot process now quits at the point where it says "Initiating PPP Interface".

I launch Linux using a boot disk. Is there a command I can issue to direct the program to skip the PPP interface initiation?

Or is there anything else I can do, given that I cannot successfully boot Linux?

It started when, for some reason that I cannot understand, my system dialed out in the middle of the boot process. I fixed this and was then able to boot successfully. I think I found an answer

At one point in the boot process, I have an option to type "i" for interactive startup. Then, I can choos "Y" or "N" if I want certain processes to run. I did this with the PPP interface startup and was able to boot successfully.
I am not sure the PPP problem is fixed, and will post more later.
